Mornings set the tone. If you wake already bracing — phone in hand, mind racing — these five counselor-approved rituals can lower the volume before the day begins.

1. Light before phone

Get daylight in your eyes before headlines in your brain. Two minutes at a window while the coffee brews tells your nervous system the day has started safely.

2. Slower exhales

Try four counts in, six counts out, four rounds. Longer exhales are a direct signal to your body: stand down, no emergency here.

3. Name the day in one line

Write a single sentence: “Today I will…” Keep it kind and small. Anxious minds calm when the day has one clear, doable shape.

4. Move for five minutes

Stretch, walk the block, shake out your shoulders. Anxiety is energy — give it somewhere useful to go.

5. A kinder first thought

Swap “I can’t handle today” for “I can handle the next hour.” Small time windows make courage possible.
